What the World Looked Like with 2 Billion People (ContributorNetwork)

According to the United Nations and its estimate of the population count of the entire world, the world population reached 7 billion people at about 4 a.m. today. If the world population continues to grow at the rate that it is currently, the world will reach 8 billion people in about 2024. With this in mind, let us look at the year that the world reached 2 billion people.

* The world population reached 2 billion people in 1927.

* On Jan. 6, the U.S. sent its Marine forces to Nicaragua.

* On Jan. 27, the Harlem Globetrotters played their inaugural game in Hinckley, Ill.

* The first transatlantic phone service was initiated, connecting London and the U.S. by telephone for the first time.

* On March 2, Babe Ruth earned $70,000, making him the highest earning baseball player at the time.

* Pope Benedict XV was born on April 16.

* The USSR agreed to have diplomatic relations with Switzerland on April 17.

* The Treaty of Jedda was signed, granting Saudi Arabia independence from Great Britain on May 20.

* An earthquake registering magnitude 8.3, which killed more than 200,000 Chinese on May 22, struck Nan Shan, China.

* Ford Motor Co. started producing the Model A when it ended production of the Tin Lizzie on May 31.

* The first plane flight took off from the West Coast, landing in Hawaii on June 29.

* The Great Mississippi Flood struck on July 29, killing 250 people and destroying 700,000 homes. Damages were estimated at $400 million at the time.

* Also on July 29, the world's first working iron lung was used, installed to a patient in Bellevue Hospital in New York.

* On Aug. 7, Canada and the U.S. dedicated the Peace Bridge between the nations.

* The first telephone service between Mexico and the U.S. opened for use on Sept. 29.

* On Nov. 13, the Holland Tunnel connects New York and New Jersey when it is opened.

* The now endangered Giant Panda was discovered on Nov. 9 in China.

* Ford Motor Co. sold its first Model A on Dec. 2, which cost at the time cost $365.

* British troops remained in Iraq despite the nation gaining its independence from Britain on Dec. 14.
