Breast Cancer Awareness Doesn't End with October (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | While October is widely known as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and pink ribbons are out in force, the reality of breast cancer doesn't end on Oct. 31. In my own life, this October was the kickoff for a fight against the disease as my mother was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in September and began chemotherapy just last week.

While I already knew a great deal about breast cancer (or so I thought), I have been given a crash course in the disease over the last couple of months and have learned more than I wanted to know.

Breast cancer is definitely not the only disease that deserves attention and should be the subject of increased awareness, but it is what it is and October is set aside to raise awareness about breast cancer specifically. I fear that when stores put away the pink and the calendar page gets turned, the issue will just become another seasonal thing that is forgotten about until next year.

That's not how it works in my family, though. My mother's cancer doesn't go away at the end of October and my pink ribbons will still be on display.

My mother discovered her cancer through a routine mammogram. She was six months late getting her annual mammogram and if she had gotten it done on time, six months ago, who knows? This aggressive type of cancer may have had six months to gain hold.

If this journey through breast cancer has taught me anything, it is this: Breast cancer doesn't care if it's October. It doesn't care if you are young or old. It doesn't care if you are rich or poor. Breast cancer wants to beat and harass your loved ones. Breast cancer wants to destroy your body, your life, your hope and your spirit.

Even though the month of awareness is almost over, it doesn't mean it's time to go easy on breast cancer. Tell your sisters. Tell your mothers. Tell your husbands, brothers, daughter, sons and friends. Tell them all that breast cancer is evil and instead of fearing it, we should all learn as much as we can about it and fight it. The more we know about this evil, the more we are armed with knowledge to fight. Spread the word every day, and not just in October.

U.S. says N. Korea talks positive, issues remain (Reuters)

GENEVA (Reuters) ? The United States and North Korea have narrowed differences in a second set of talks since wider negotiations on nuclear disarmament collapsed in 2009, but issues remain, the top U.S. negotiator said on Monday.

Ambassador Stephen Bosworth, U.S. special representative for North Korea policy, said the U.S. goal was to find a "solid foundation" on which to relaunch bilateral and multilateral talks with Pyongyang.

"We are moving in a positive direction. We have narrowed some differences but we still have differences that we have to resolve," Bosworth told reporters in Geneva after a first day of meetings and a dinner that he hosted for the North Korean delegation, led by First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan.

"We will continue to try to narrow differences," he added.

Bosworth said that the discussions had been very intensive but gave no clue as to where progress had been made or what areas remained problematic.

There was no immediate comment from North Korean officials who are to host the talks on Tuesday, including a possible joint lunch. Bosworth said he expected to make a statement after the talks conclude.

Earlier, Clifford Hart, U.S. special envoy for the stalled six-party talks, told reporters after the morning session that each side had made "useful presentations" of its position.

The session, which follows talks in New York in late July, is aimed more at managing tensions on the divided Korean peninsula than resuming stalled regional talks on ending the North's nuclear programs.

U.S. officials have described the talks as "exploratory" and aimed at keeping Pyongyang engaged so as to avoid any "miscalculations" by the reclusive nation.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, speaking to reporters in Washington shortly before Bosworth's remarks, said the talks were proceeding "in a very businesslike fashion."

"In July, we gave the North Koreans a specific set of initiatives that we'd like to see to demonstrate that they are prepared to take concrete steps to meet their denuclearization obligations," Nuland said, saying the United States planned to follow up on all those issues during the current talks.

"Where are they now on their readiness to make concrete progress on their...nuclear responsibilities? How do they evaluate the first round of talks that they had with the...the South Koreans? ...Are they prepared to commit to continue this process?," she said.

SLIGHT EASING OF TENSIONS

U.S. officials and analysts were keeping expectations low, despite a slight easing of tensions between American ally South Korea and North Korea, and Pyongyang's repeated calls for resuming nuclear talks.

The six-party talks, including North Korea's ally China as well as Russia, Japan and South Korea, fell apart in 2009 when North Korea quit the process after U.N. sanctions were imposed following its second nuclear test.

China wants North Korea to deepen talks with the South and the United States in the hope of restarting nuclear negotiations, the Chinese vice premier told his North Korean counterpart, state media reported on Monday.

The six-party forum offers the North economic aid in return for dismantling its nuclear program which is believed to have yielded enough fissile material to make up to 10 atomic bombs.

Last year, the North unveiled a uranium enrichment facility at Yongbyon, which opens a second route to make a nuclear bomb along with its plutonium program, and argued it was for peaceful purposes. It says uranium enrichment falls outside the realm of previous six-party negotiations.

A September 2005 agreement reached by all sides does not specifically refer to uranium enrichment, only stating that the North must cease all nuclear activities.

Seoul and Washington insist that Pyongyang must first halt its nuclear activities, including its uranium enrichment program, before six-party talks can restart.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, on his first visit to Asia, said in an op-ed published in Japan's Yomiuri newspaper that the common challenges faced by the United States and Japan included North Korea and China.

South Korea said last week that Pyongyang's defiance over uranium enrichment remains the biggest hurdle.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has stated his readiness to return to the nuclear talks "without any preconditions." He says the North remains committed to fulfilling the September agreement with the aim of denuclearizing the entire peninsula.

US requests website censoring details from China (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? The U.S. government has formally asked China to turn over details of its policies for censoring websites.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said Wednesday that the request is being pursued under World Trade Organization rules governing how member countries deal with trade issues. Kirk said the concerns center on the competitiveness of foreign websites in China.

China heavily censors its Internet, and Kirk said the U.S. wants to understand China's rules governing website blocking so that foreign websites can adopt policies to avoid being blocked.

The request also seeks information on the mechanics of Internet censorship in China, and whether it's implemented directly by the government or indirectly by Internet providers.

Some 500 million people in China use the Internet and are hotly pursued by marketers. China's censorship rules are opaque, and it's not just political sites that are blocked.

China's policies led to a rare public fight with a major U.S. company last year when Google Inc. announced it was going to stop censoring its Internet search results on its Chinese website as the result of a hacking attack believed to have originated in China. The U.S. is increasing pressure on China over its trade policies, including its currency practices, but there is broad disagreement about the appropriate strategies for ensuring fair competition.

LAS VEGAS ? Republican presidential contenders attacked upstart Herman Cain's economic plan as a tax increase waiting to happen Tuesday night, moving swiftly in a fiery campaign debate to blunt the former businessman's unlikely rise in the race for the party's nomination.

Old animosities flared, too, as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry swapped criticism in unusually personal terms. "You have a problem with allowing someone to finish speaking," Romney declared as the two men interrupted one another repeatedly in a disagreement over immigration, one of several vigorous clashes they had.

In a bow to Nevada voters, who will be among the first to choose among the candidates early next year, no one said he wanted to open a proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain in a remote part of the state.

The fifth debate in six weeks ranged over familiar and contentious territory ? from immigration and health care to the economy and energy, often in antagonistic terms. The candidates engaged each other more directly and sometimes more heatedly than in previous debates.

Romney's Mormon faith also came up, and Perry said he disagreed with a pastor and political supporter who described the religion as a cult. "I can't apologize any more than that," the Texan said.

"That's fine," responded Romney.

But Cain's unlikely rise from asterisk in the polls to contender was clearly on the minds of his rivals on stage in a hotel along the Las Vegas Strip.

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota led the verbal assault moments after the debate began, saying his call for a 9 percent federal sales tax would only be the beginning, with the rate rising later.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania wasn't nearly as gentle, citing one analysis that found that taxes would go up for 84 percent of the nation's households if Cain's proposal went into effect. "We're talking about major increases in taxes," he said, adding that a single person and a couple with children with the same income would pay the same tax under Cain's proposal.

Undeterred, Cain insisted the charges were untrue. He said he was being criticized because lobbyists, accountants and others "want to continue to be able to manipulate the American people with a 10-million- word mess," the current tax code.

Cain's proposal is for a 9 percent personal income tax, a 9 percent corporate tax and a 9 percent national sales tax.

The former pizza company CEO is the latest and unlikeliest phenomenon in the race to pick a Republican rival for President Barack Obama. A black man in a party that draws few votes from Africans Americans, he had bumped along with little notice as Romney sought to fend off one fast-rising rival after another.

That all changed in the past few weeks, after Perry burst into the race and then fell back in the polls. However unlikely Cain's rise, Tuesday night's debate made clear that none of his rivals are willing to let him go unchallenged.

"Herman, I love you, brother, but let me tell you something, you don't need to have a big analysis to figure this thing out," Perry said to Cain. "Go to New Hampshire where they don't have a sales tax and you're fixing to give them one," he said, referring to the state that will hold the first primary early next year.

The debate was the fifth since Labor Day, and the last scheduled for nearly a month in a race that is fluid in more than one way.

While polls chart a series of rises and falls for various contenders ? Romney remaining at or near the top ? the schedule is far from set. Florida's decision to move up its primary set off a scramble as Iowa maneuvered to make sure its caucuses are the first real test of the race and New Hampshire works to protect its half-century distinction as host to the first primary.

It was Perry who instigated the confrontation over immigration, saying that Romney had no credentials on the issue because he had once hired an illegal worker, the "height of hypocrisy."

Romney denied the charge, saying he had hired a company to mow his lawn and did not know that it had an illegal immigrant on its payroll.

The two men talked over one another, and at one point, Romney placed his on Perry's shoulder.

"It's been a tough couple of debates for Rick. And I understand that so you're going to get testy," he said.

As Perry continued to speak, Romney stopped him: "You have a problem with allowing someone to finish speaking, and I suggest that if you want to become president of the United States, you've got to let both people speak," he said.

On a more substantive level, Perry said he opposed repealing the portion of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution that says anyone born in the United States is automatically a citizen.

Bachmann, Santorum and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas all sidestepped the question.

Cain found himself on the defensive on two others issues during the two-hour debate.

He apologized for earlier remarks about building an electric fence on the Mexico border that could kill people trying to cross illegally.

And he said he wouldn't be willing to negotiate with terrorists, even though he suggested he might be in an interview earlier in the day.

Foreign policy took a secondary role in the debate, and the new strain of Republican isolationism quickly surfaced.

Paul said U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Korea ? where they have been stationed for more than 50 years ? and foreign aid to Israel cut.

Perry said it was "time to have a very serious discussion about defunding the United Nations."

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman skipped this debate, saying he was boycotting the Nevada caucuses in a dispute over the primary and caucus calendar. He is campaigning exclusively in New Hampshire in hopes of a victory that can move him into the thick of the race.

Not only Republicans, but Obama was also critical of Cain's economic plan during the day.

In an interview with ABC News, Obama said it would be a "huge burden" on middle-class and working families.

US deports record number of immigrants

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton, announcing the numbers in Washington, said about 55 percent of the 396,906 individuals deported had felony or misdemeanor convictions. Officials said the number of individuals convicted of crimes was up 89 percent from 2008.

Officials could not immediately say how many of those crimes related just to previous immigration violations. Individuals can be convicted of a felony just for returning to the U.S. or being found in the U.S. after the government orders them to leave.

Among those deported were more than 1,000 people convicted of homicide. Another 5,800 were sexual offenders, and about 80,000 people convicted of drug related crimes or driving under the influence.

Authorities say two-thirds of those deported either recently crossed the border or had done so repeatedly.

"This comes down to focusing our resources as best we can on our priorities," Morton said. "We continue to hope for comprehensive immigration reform at a national level, working with the Congress, but in the meantime, we work with the resources we have, under the laws we have."

Egypt's Mobinil says customer boycott subsides (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? The number of subscribers cancelling their Mobinil subscriptions has tumbled from a peak earlier this year when some customers took offence at a cartoon posted online by the company's founder, its chairman said on Sunday.

The Egyptian mobile company suffered a boycott after Christian business tycoon and politician Naguib Sawiris tweeted a cartoon of Mickey Mouse with a long beard and Minnie Mouse veiled in black in June.

Some customers took it as an offence to Islam.

"Certainly the impact of the tweet has diminished drastically since the peak," Mobinil Chairman Alex Shalaby told Reuters. "We will feel it in this quarter which will be announced shortly."

He said the number of "porting out" requests by subscribers reached around 20,000 a day at the peak of the boycott, compared to 1,000 or less per day before the incident.

"Today we are way below that figure, a fraction of that figure for sure," said Shalaby.

Mobinil, a venture of Sawiris's Orascom Telecom and France Telecom, competes with Vodafone's Egyptian unit and Etisalat Misr, the Egyptian arm of Abu Dhabi-based telecoms group Etisalat.

Shalaby, speaking at the launch of an initiative to give users better access to government services, said Mobinil was "fully ready" to begin talks with the government to bring fourth-generation (4G) telecommunication services to the country.

The number of mobile phone users in Egypt grew to 78 million at the end of July from 71 million at the end of 2010 but analysts say the market is reaching saturation and providers need to focus on data services to keep revenues expanding.

Egypt suffered a sudden exodus of investors in the wake of the uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak and many are hesitant to return.

Shalaby said Egypt's interim government needed to boost security on the streets and more actively engage in dialogue with the private sector to improve the investment climate.

"(The main step) is security, to give confidence to investors that Egypt is secure, that the streets of Egypt are secure, that the rule of law prevails," Shalaby said.

Cantor backs off calling protesters 'mobs' (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is no longer saying that Occupy Wall Street protesters amount to "mobs," but he says they're divisive in ways that tea partyers are not.

In comments to reporters Tuesday, the Virginia Republican refused to repeat or renounce his comment over the weekend that the protests in New York and Washington are being carried out by "mobs." But, he said, these protests are "very different" than the tea party protests last year, in that they are pitting Americans against other Americans. Tea partyers, Cantor said, directed their ire at the government.

Democrats noted that Cantor didn't object to the tea party's in-your-face confrontations with lawmakers last year.

Stock futures dip on Greece, Yahoo rallies (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures were modestly lower on Monday as concerns over Greece's teetering finances returned to the forefront and after equities ended their worst quarter since 2008.

Draft budget figures showed Greece would miss its deficit targets for both this year and next, which could force the country to seek more bailout funds. If it fails to get the financing, the government may be forced to default, an outcome that could accelerate a slide back into global recession.

"This news is disappointing but not surprising," said Oliver Pursche, president at Gary Goldberg Financial Services in Suffern, New York. "While I think they will get additional help if needed, there remains a lot of uncertainty over how much more money could be provided as well as the framework for a possible deal."

S&P 500 futures fell 1.4 points and were slightly below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures dropped 31 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures took off 11.25 points.

European shares were down 1.5 percent early Monday while Morgan Stanley, which has exposure to European banks, lost 1 percent to $13.38 in premarket trading.

Gold, viewed as a hedge in times of risk, climbed 2 percent, rising for a third day.

Concerns over sovereign debt problems in the euro zone have pressured U.S. equities recently, and contributed to Wall Street's worst quarter since the depths of the financial crisis in 2008.

The S&P 500 index lost more than 14 percent last quarter and over 7 percent in September alone.

Pursche said that given recent losses, equities may not see the same kind of dramatic selloff that previous setbacks regarding Europe caused.

"We believe the selloff is overdone," he said. "Having said that, investors need to stay careful. There's still so much risk that even though financial stocks are cheap, for example, they still have room to fall."

Yahoo Inc rose 5.4 percent to $13.88 in premarket trading. The founder and chief executive of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba , said Friday he was keen to buy the company and has talked with other potential buyers about options.

Investors looked ahead to September data on manufacturing from the Institute for Supply Management, seen coming in at 50.5, versus 50.6 last month. The data is due at 10 a.m. EDT. September vehicle sales are also on tap.

On the upside, Eastman Kodak surged 39 percent to $1.08 premarket after losing half their value on Friday. The photography company has hired a law firm specializing in bankruptcy, triggering speculation it could file. Kodak denied it has a bankruptcy plan.

U.S. stocks fell more than 2 percent on Friday as weak economic data from China sparked fears of a global economic slowdown while Morgan Stanley plummeted on concerns about its exposure to European banks.
