Kim Kardashian: Not Seeking New Fake Husband

Kim Kardashian is kooling it on the dating front for awhile.

At Thursday evening's opening of the Kardashian Khaos boutique at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the star says she's remaining upbeat despite a rough 2011.

"I'm really thinking that 2011 was a lot of learning lessons," Kim says of the past 12 months, which saw her get engaged, married and split from Kris Humphries.

"In 2012, I'm just excited for the New Year and the new me.”

Will the new Kim be just as phony and dull as the old one? Stay tuned.

Despite the sad, fast end of her fake marriage to Humphries, the superstar insisted she hasn't ruled out getting married a third time (she was married to Damon Thomas for several years before the Kim Kardashian sex tape with Ray J made her famous).

"I believe in love ... always," the 31-year-old said. "I'm just not looking."

Fret not. Kris Jenner should hand-pick a new pro athlete before long.

Carrier IQ being grilled by FTC, but who's asking questions of the carriers?

all sorts of evil

We're all getting tired of the whole Carrier IQ mess.  Analytics are necessary evil, but in this case done in a totally bullshit way, with little or no regard to how the consumer might feel about it.  No wonder it caused a huge uproar, which has now found its way to Washington.  Federal lawmakers have executives from Carrier IQ in front of them today, hammering them about how the software works, why it's needed, and how bad this is for you and I.  According to Mira Woods from Carrier IQ marketing communications, Carrier IQ has been completely transparent and has nothing to hide.  She also confirmed that Carrier IQ chief executive Larry Lenhart and the company’s senior vice president for marketing Andrew Coward met with regulators today to the Washington Post.  The FTC and FCC are investigating after being asked by Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass) as a possible unfair or deceptive act or practice.  Yes, a bunch of people who may or may not really care about you and I are putting on a good show during an election year.  Hallelujah!

But that's all a load of crapola.  Where are the execs from the Big 4 U.S. carriers that hired Carrier IQ, and why aren't they sweating it out in front of some elected people or FTC bigwigs?  Yes, I said all four -- Verizon may not use Carrier IQ, but they collect the same exact information somehow.

This whole campaign against a small company from Silicon Valley that writes software for American cellular carriers is a lynch mob going after the wrong people.  The folks you pay every month are the real culprits here, and were just looking for an easy way to harvest information out of you.  They found someone smart enough to write it and went all-in.  When Carrier IQ gets driven out of business, and the bids go out for someone else to write the same style software, there will be plenty of takers.  Suits from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon need to be held accountable for this one folks, because they aren't going to stop until they are forced to -- even if that means contracting another company to do their dirty work.

Adobe Flash Player, Netflix streaming apps updated for Ice Cream Sandwich

Now that Ice Cream Sandwich is rolling out officially in the US on Verizon, it appears at least a few developers have seen the need to roll out Android 4.0-friendly versions of their software. Just as promised a (final?) version of Flash Player of Android has hit the market specifically to make sure ICS devices can get the "full" web. Meanwhile, in a less melancholy update, Netflix also updated its Watch Instantly app to work on Android 4.0, something we're sure on-the-go movie watchers will appreciate. If you've been lucky enough to get your hands on a Galaxy Nexus LTE, let us know if you're seeing any other apps that either have received or need to get an update to keep things working smoothly.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Back again to see RPG being back again, again.

I had to read the title of this "welcome back" like, four times in a row. Very clever. Very confusing. Or mayhaps I am just ridiculously tired.

Anyways, nice to see you back again. I used to poke around RPGuild before I came here, all those years ago. What was your username?

Hope to run into you soon!

Academia.edu Raises $4.5 Million To Help Researchers Share Their Scholarly Papers

academiashot1Academia.edu, a social network for researchers, is having a good year. In 2011 it's tripled its total registered userbase to 800,000, and today it's announcing some major news that ensures the site will be expanding well into the future: it's just raised $4.5 million in a funding round led by Spark Capital, with participation from True Ventures. This is the company's second round of funding, after a $2.2 million round in late 2009 (the investors from that round participated in this one as well). Academia.edu can be thought of as a social network for academics, in that it allows them to forge connections and follow updates around their field, but it has another benefit: it gives them a powerful, efficient way to distribute their research. Unlike, say, a personal website, which probably won't have much in the way of analytics or search engine optimization, Academia.edu will let researchers keep tabs on how many people are reading their articles with specialized analytics tools, and it also does very well in Google search results. Academics are uploading 2,500 articles to the site each day, and, as a result, the site is now drawing some 3 million unique visitors, many of whom are arriving at the site's articles via Google.

You Bet Apple TV Is Coming, Says Apple Guru ... - Business Insider

Apple analyst Gene Munster just reiterated his belief that Apple is going to launch a TV next year.?

He made the comments at our IGNITION: Future of Media conference this morning.

In fact, Gene is so sure an Apple TV is coming that he told anyone in the audience who is thinking of buying a TV to wait, because Apple's is going to be awesome.

Some details:

  • Gene thinks the Apple TV will be a full-fledged TV set, not an external gadget like the current Apple TV that you have to plug into your TV set.
  • This is because Apple thinks people hate to plug in external gadgets (and Apple is obviously right about that, though it will still be startling if people are willing to pay a huge premium for an Apple TV just to avoid plugging in a $100 gadget).
  • Gene thinks Apple TVs will come in a range of sizes, in contrast to most Apple products, which are one-size-fits-all.? Part of Apple's goal here, Gene says, will be to appeal to young Apple fanatics who can't afford or don't have room for a 50-inch flat screen.
  • Gene thinks Apple's TVs will be priced at TWICE the prevailing market price for a normal TV: $1,600, for example, for a TV of a similar size from another manufacturer that might cost $800. (If this is really the case, Apple will be able to preserve its extraordinary profit margins).
  • The magic of Apple's TV, Gene says, will be seamless integration with your other Apple devices and service. The TV will come with a standard remote, but you'll also be able to control it with your iPhone or iPad or via Siri.? You'll also be able to download console and other games, content, etc., from iTunes, the App Store, and iCloud.
  • Apple's TV, Gene says, will be the first TV that thinks the way you do. Instead of trying to remember what channel is ESPN is on, for example, you'll just fire up (or say) "ESPN."
  • You'll still have to have a cable subscription and cable box, Gene says, because Apple doesn't have enough content otherwise.? But the only thing you'll have to do is screw the co-ax cable into the back of the TV set.
  • Gene thinks Apple will launch its TVs for the holiday season next year. That's what our assumption has been as well.
